La‘akea is a life sharing community that includes intellectually and developmentally disabled youth and adults dedicated to discovering, supporting, and enhancing the contribution of each individual through meaningful opportunities and productive work. The programs include farming, economic ventures, the arts and activities of daily living – all coming alive in a community with homes, community buildings, a farm market, craft studios, and multipurpose buildings.

We are looking for caring and compassionate individuals who want to “life-share” in a group home setting in exchange for room & board.

We have an opening for a full-time caregiver position. Minimum six month commitment.

Duties will include meal preparation, light housekeeping, companionship activities, transportation, and may also include bathing.

Qualifications:

Experience working with individuals with varied abilities, special needs or autism is preferred but not required.

Each year La’akea welcomes a limited number of volunteer co-workers. The co-workers join La’akea for a minimum of six months, however, many spend a year with us, and some decide to stay longer and apply for a permanent position.

Generally, the volunteer co-workers have an interest in working with people with developmental disabilities in a holistic atmosphere. During their time at La’akea they live in an extended family setting in a group home and are responsible for assisting our residents in their daily life and work. Depending on interest, La’akea provides many opportunities to learn more about and appreciate people with special needs. There are also opportunities to learn additional skills in the workshops and on the farm. Our volunteer co-workers, with their diverse backgrounds, bring enthusiasm and energy to the La’akea experience.
