Somerset’s professional and friendly staff spends its summer living, eating, teaching, coaching, and playing with our campers for seven weeks. The typical day begins at 7:30 a.m. and lasts until at least 9 p.m., which is bedtime for the youngest campers. All female staff members live in cabins with approximately 10 campers and two other staff members.
While your days are busy and filled with activity, Somerset provides its staff with ample time off to recharge. There is no better place to be during the summer than central Maine, which in addition to its natural beauty, offers an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities to take advantage of each summer.
All of Somerset’s staff are specialty counselors – on top of being a cabin counselor they teach and coach in one of our forty activities. No staff member is limited to one area of camp all summer, however. We encourage staff to explore all of their talents and serve in several areas of camp.
Cabin counselors live with a particular bunk and age group and also spend part of their day at an activity area of expertise. Counselors are expected to be role models who must be fun-loving, creative, patient and genuinely concerned for the welfare and development of the campers.
Cabin counselors are supervised by a Unit Leader for their age group as well the Head Counselor. Counselors will work with two to three other counselors in their cabin and receive five days off during the summer.
Activity Heads are cabin counselors who are also responsible for the oversight of a particular activity area in camp. This includes overseeing the other counselors in the activity, facility, equipment, and lesson plans.
